5 Things to Know Before Traveling to Germany
I recently shared my experience being a black woman and living in Germany on my YouTube channel and many people wanted to know more such as tips and anything else.
I was actually supposed to be working and living in Germany from April 2020 onwards but of course, the pandemic happened.
However, I still wanted to give you all a guide on Germany including what I wish I knew before living in Germany short term.
Germany: What You Need to Know Before Traveling
Take the Extra Time to Learn the German Language
Do not do like me and depend on Germans who know the English language. Ahead of traveling, take the time to study German. It will provide you the best opportunity to truly immerse yourself in the culture. Now the German language is hard to learn but treat it as a challenge for yourself and you will be very thankful you did.
2. Germans Take Sunday Off
Do not expect many options of restaurants and grocery stores to be open on Sundays. Nine times out of ten, most stores will be closed as they truly take Sunday as a day of rest unlike America. This was definitely a culture shock for me as I walked out of my hotel room on the first Sunday I was there with literally everything closed.
3. Being Punctual is a Must
I’ve always struggled with being on time here and there and in Germany, as a mutual sign of respect, they expect you to be on time. No excuses! Sometimes you may need to learn the hard way but if you have a hard time being punctual like me, make the effort to do what you need to do to make it in a respectable manner, especially in a foreign country.
4. Cigarettes Are Everywhere
In the states, for so many years it's been a country-wide law that you cannot smoke in restaurants and other establishments. This has led to very little people smoking even outside but that is not the case in European countries like Germany. Be prepared to be around a lot of smoking in clubs, restaurants, and outside walking.
5. Amazing Recycling Options
Another difference to America is that there are much more ways to recycle in Germany. And, you can get rewarded for it. It’s not everyday that I saw someone throwing plastic in a normal trash can and I loved that about Germany! The government has set up a great rewarding system for their citizens to recycle which is proven to have positive results.
