5 Easy Tips for Planning Your Move
It’s no secret that the logistics behind moving can be very stressful and overwhelming. I’ve certainly been there before and it’s no fun. Whether you are moving to a new apartment in your current city or moving across the country, having a solid plan can help make all the difference in your move.
Here are 5 Easy Tips for Planning Your Move
1. Research Cost of Living
Every state or city’s cost of living will be different from the next. Before your move, be sure to make it a priority to research the cost of living items, services, and more in your new area and compare it to the where you currently live.
There are many websites that’ll allow you to enter your current earnings and where you presently live and compare it to your new place of living. When I moved from Orlando to Atlanta, this tip was extremely helpful and allowed me to be better prepared with my finances. Remember that it is always best to be over prepared than underprepared especially the further away you are moving.
2. Organize Your Rooms Before You Move
As soon as you have your moving date you should begin decluttering the things you don’t need on your own. The less junk you have the better! I recommend doing a room a weekend so your plate isn’t too full. From there, it’s time to sort and purge! I sometimes tend to hold on to possessions that I do not need and it is important to weed out as many possessions as you can. Now I am not referring to classic pictures that hold a special place in your heart but you need to part with everything that you do not use or haven’t used in quite some time. With clothes, the rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it in two months, toss it!
There are also many options such as donating your things that’ll allow you to still part with your items but know that they will still be in great use to someone else. Donation centers such as Goodwill and The Salvation Army will accept almost anything from CDs and DVDs, kitchen supplies, and anything else that could be put to good use for someone less fortunate than you or someone who loves to collect used things. You can also get a tax write-off on the items you donate.

3. Hire A Moving Company
Growing up and moving often due to my dad’s career, I’ve seen it all. Sometimes we would pack and move ourselves and other times we would hire a moving company to do the work for us. Let me tell you, everything always ran smoothly when a professional moving company was hired.
Hire a moving company that fits into your budget. If you’re not sure what you need help with, Gameday Moving Services is a trusted moving company to look into! This long distance moving company located in Athens, Georgia will take all of the stress moving brings you and your family and safely and efficiently pack and move your belongings into its new location. With an endless list of services, these skilled professionals will literally take the load off of moving.
4. Get to Know Your New Location
Do some digging into what the atmosphere and culture is like in your new location. If you can’t visit in-person, use social media and blog posts to help you learn all of the fun things to do and stay informed on the proceedings of the local government in your new area. Hashtags will be your best friend. For instance when I visited Destin Florida, I took to TikTok, Pinterest, and Instagram to find the best places to eat and things to do. This will help you see what people around your age do for fun and give you an endless list of restaurants to visit if you’re a major foodie like myself.
5. Change Your Address Before You Move
For some reason, this always seems to be the last thing many people do when moving but if you want a hassle-free move, I suggest changing your address before you are in your new location that way you will have one less thing to worry about. To do this, all you have to do is visit your local post office and complete an address change form. It’ll also be a great time to update all of your bills, cable, utilities, and more to your new location. Even if it seems tedious at first, once you finish this task you will not have to worry about it again. Trust me, nothing is worse than still getting old mail from a previous tenant of where you currently live.
Whether you’re moving soon or just entertaining the thought, I hope these 5 easy tips for planning your move can make everything less stressful!
