How to Afford to Tavel:The Top Things You Need to do to Save

People often ask me how I’m able to afford traveling to different places year-round. Now although I wish I could say it’s because I’m filthy rich, that would be far from the truth (ya girl’s not rich yet). Essentially, it comes down to prioritizing what’s important to you. Much like when I was saving money to buy a new car in 2020, I spent that year of quarantine expanding my travel fund because I had faith we’d be back to exploring in 2021. Now looking at how steep these flight prices are, I couldn’t be more thankful I made traveling a priority even when it was almost impossible to do so last year.

“I Can’t Afford to Travel”

If you find yourself saying these words yet constantly go out to eat, hang out with friends at the bars, and go shopping every weekend then it’s clear traveling isn’t in your main priorities. I can’t say it enough but it’s important to tackle your necessities first, rent, utilities, phone bills etc, then whatever you have left over you can begin to move around and start saving for travel.

Here are ways to change your mindset and 5 actionable steps you can take to afford to travel!

Open a Dedicated Savings Account to Travel

Setting apart a separate savings account meant specifically for your travels will allow you to have a clear view of your progress. Everything in this account is for your trip; no rainy day funds, and downpayment on a house money, just strictly money for seeing the beautiful world.

Sell Some of Your Belongings

I’ve seen many travel bloggers sell a lot of their belongings when they knew they wanted to go on long term travel trips. Especially from this past year, I feel like I’ve become somewhat of a hoarder with the amount of time we’ve spent inside our homes. Pawn shops can be a fast and efficient way to trade in your items for money that goes towards your travel fund.

Chapes-JPL, a local pawn shop in Atlanta has upgraded what we know of pawn shops. In a much simpler way, all you have to do is mail in your belongings to Chapes JPL and you’ll receive your appraisal online. So no longer those creepy pawn shops with high interest rates, trade in your valuables to experienced professionals. Along with buying things like watches, handbags, and necklaces, Chapel-JPL also provides low-interest loans and pawn loans in Johns Creek. For over 40 years they have been the highest-rated pawn shop in Atlanta so send them some of your things to get closer to traveling the world.

Know Your Budget

It’s time to think about your trip or trips. How much do you want to spend? Where do you want to travel to? It’s basically time to get realistic. Take the necessary steps to do the planning to see how long you have to save and if you can meet your goals. If you can’t, it's definitely okay. I would then recommend looking into a trip that is more affordable to your lifestyle and budget.

Stay Motivated

When I had those days or nights I wanted to splurge on food or a spa day, I had to think about my reward. Create a clear and vivid goal in your mind and even make something you see physically everyday to remind you of the places you are going to visit. This steady reminder will for sure help you stay on track.

Actionable Ways to Cut Your Spending

  • Save on Gas

The GasBuddy app has saved me hundreds every year simply by showing me the cheapest gas stations in my area. Download this app and get to saving.

  • Open a Rewards Credit Card

A credit card with travel rewards can open so many doors for more affordable travel! I spend money here and there on my Delta Gold Card and build up airline miles, hotel rewards and much more!

  • Sign up for Travel Newsletters

I know we all hate those pointless newsletters that we never unsubscribe to but signing up for newsletters from airlines and travel apps will allow you to receive great last-minute deals and travel specials happening helping you potentially save hundreds of dollars.

  • Earn Extra Money on the Side

My side hustles help fund many of my projects and travel adventures. Think about renting your house or apartment, selling products or services online, or even picking up a part time job. Some or all of the money from your side job can go straight towards your travel fund!

Remember that everyone’s situation is different and the most important thing you can do is to track your experiences. Be patient with yourself yet motivated and you will begin to build a lucrative travel fund.
